I’ve been reading a bit about the rumours circling RIM the past few weeks. These are mainly about alleged leaks of product info. Products like an upcoming clamshell or touchscreen Blackberry. I’m thinking about how “leaked” or “rumoured” products impact public perception of a company. And, the kinds of info a company can also gain from their public following a rumour or leak.
I think that rumours can be a good thing for your company. From your perspective, it could shows that there are people excited about your products, and the future of your development, and want to spread the word about it. If you’re RIM, it shows that there are people who want you to have more success than the iPhone and can’t wait to hear about that “iPhone Killer.”
On the other side of the coin, the rumour mill can make it seem like there are a lot of unauthorized leaks coming from your comany. Security of information becomes an issue. Stock prices could be affected, current and potential investors could be discouraged.
If these rumours are perceived to be officially announced products, your public might start thinking you’re producing a lot of vapourware and become frustrated.
My point is, the occasional rumour about your future product can be a good thing. It generates buzz and gets people talking about the future of your company. If you’re the source of the rumour, eventually you’re going to have to deliver something, or your fans will stop paying attention to your buzz.
By the way, doesn’t the Blackberry Bold look slick?
